How an SMS QR code works
The code uses the SMSTO format that phone scanners widely recognize: SMSTO:+14155552671:JOIN. The number is cleaned to digits and a leading plus sign, and the message follows the second colon exactly as you typed it.
On scan, the iPhone Camera app and most Android cameras open the Messages app with the number in the recipient field and the text in the message box. Sending is always the person's choice. Standard messaging rates from their carrier apply, which matters if your audience is traveling.
Because the message travels as a regular text, this works on any phone with a mobile plan, without an app or data connection. It is a good fit for short keyword replies, such as JOIN, STOP or a booking code, that an automated system can read.
Where it helps
- A shop's counter sign invites customers to text a keyword to join a promotions list, which is faster than filling in a form.
- A parking lot posts a code that texts the space number to the operator, so drivers do not have to remember it.
- A charity event displays a code that starts a text pledge with the campaign keyword already written.
- A repair service puts a code on its van so people can text for a callback with the word “Quote”.
Tips before you print
- Include the country code in the number if anyone abroad might scan the code.
- Keep the message to a keyword or one short sentence. Long messages make the code denser and are more likely to be edited by mistake.
- If you run an opt-in list, make sure your messaging provider handles the keyword you print before the materials go out.
- Test on both iPhone and Android. A few older scanner apps open Messages with the number but leave the body empty.
